Literature Text

'Everything you write sounds like a scientific thesis or questionable theory. Breaking your arm and mistaking it for your wrist? How do you even make that sound like a boring lecture in anatomy class when telling a doctor? Whether I should be glad that Jack is with you, I have to say I'm not. I've told you in past mails, you can't use Guardians as guinea pigs! You'll distort the whole childhood existence!'

Jamie was of no help, as usual, when it came to your explanation on why you had needed Jack to be here. Your response would always be that he was just selfish and wanted to keep Jack to himself, though you had originally not cared much for the winter spirit.

'Childhood existence is based on superstitions of personified weather? The next thing you’re going to say is that the yetis make the Christmas toys and not the elves. That aside, Jack should at least help in some of the experimenting after he broke my arm. You should have seen him, he was absolutely vicious, Jamie!'

“Okay, so. . .what am I doing here again?” seeing as you had been on lock down because of the snow, you had thought it best to keep indoor and invited Jack into your own personal study, which was sort of like a library. “You don't know how to have fun, really, you don't.”

You closed your laptop and turned on your wheeled chair to look at Jack. He was sitting on the table you had been using the day before to categories certain files, and now half of those files were scattered and the others were wet because they had been frozen and melted by the heater. Jack seemed to have been reading your mind and was grinning at the fact he had annoyed you.

“I'm gonna have to redo those.” you sighed. “No matter, I have a week to do everything . . . my arm. . .”

Jack rolled his eyes. “C'mon, you can chop it right off and it'll be fine.”

“It's as cold as death—”

“You should create a new saying. One that goes 'as cold as Jack Frost' and not use death in it.”

“I have no blood circulating in my arm.”

“You're ignoring me, aren't you?”

You turned your eyes to his, momentarily loosing yourself before coming back to reality and answering him, “I'm trying to, but you’re making it really hard to do. How can one ignore the fact that it's snowing indoors? Stop that.”

“Such a joy-kill as ever.” he gave a fake, depressing sigh, “I thought you would have loosened up a bit in your older years . . .who are you texting with that has you ignoring me?”

You hummed as you finished the text and hit send before responding, “Some alien hunting, Bigfoot loving, Abby the greyhound owning weirdo of a friend.”

“Wait, what?”

“Doesn't matter.” you stood from your seat and reached for the board with your left hand, flipping it to reveal the timeline of Jack's existence. “I need you to fill in the blanks. Think you can handle that, Jack?”

He raised a brow, “What're you trying to do? Prove I don't actually exist even if you’re looking right at me?”

“I'm trying to find the scientific explanation of your existence.” you drew a circle around the old doodled sketch of him, which looked nothing like him. “Evolution is always the one used for almost everything, like vampires.”

“I'm not a vampire!”

“I didn't say you were,” you snapped at him. “You're some sort of apparition, or plasma being—ghost, before you ask.”

Jack narrowed his eyes. “You can believe in ghost and not a Guardian?”

You shook your head as you placed the cap on the marker with your mouth. “I don't believe in ghost.”

“Like you don't believe in me.” he asked in all seriousness.

“Someone once explained,” you said as you shrugged, “That I must have believed in them if I saw them. There was nothing said about physical contact . . .that's actually a good experiment to try.”

Quickly, you took the cap of the marker off again, with your mouth, and began to write on the board the ideas you had just gotten. It stood to Jack's reason, if you believed in him you could see him and therefore should be able to touch him, but you couldn't. This boy, you thought, was gold for your experiments and projects to be entered in contests.

“You have a scary look in your eyes—”

“If I stab you, will it go right through you?”

“You are not stabbing me!”

'I'm really worried on what you'll do to poor Jack. He remembers you as that strange little girl with mixed sense on what is real and what is supposedly not. The little girl that hurt him with no logical reasoning he could think of.

What's not real, does it exist? What exists, is it real? But I guess you wouldn't think much on those questions, you're too strict on yourself on finding an explanation on everything. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I once mentioned you to Jack, though he didn't know we spoke of the same person.

Don't go probing him like alien will eventually do us, alright?

Your close friend, Jamie Bennett.'

“Why couldn’t you be right handed?! Stop trying to stab me with that thing!

“Don’t worry, Jack. It’ll go right through your lung and you’ll be fine.”
